The Story

The places our families remember.

Verandah Press turns remembered places into prints: the homes, streets, kitchens, verandahs, and festival mornings that our parents and grandparents carried with them. The first collection begins with my mother's memories of old South India, the cities she lived in, from Bangalore to Mangalore to Madurai, and the ordinary mornings in between.

The memory keeper

She remembers. We render. She decides what is true.

My mother is the founding storyteller. She describes a place the way she lived it: the light on a red oxide floor, the sound of crows in the morning, the shape of an old teak doorway, the tree that used to stand at the corner. Her authority comes from memory, not from art school. She is the one who knows when a detail is wrong, and when a scene finally looks the way she remembers it.

How a memory becomes a print

Every print begins with a story.

  1. She remembers. A parent or grandparent describes a place in detail: the floor, the roof, the gate, the trees, the objects, and the time of day it lived in.
  2. We render. We bring the scene to life with modern image-generation tools, working from her description rather than from a stock idea of India.
  3. She edits. We revise, again and again, around the details she knows are right, until the place feels true to the person who lived with it.

We are candid about how this is made. The rendering is done with modern image-generation tools, guided at every step by the person who remembers the place. The memory is hers, the judgment is hers, and the story is written in her words. We never call this work hand-painted, because it isn't. We call it what it is: a memory, rendered with care.

Why it matters

The story is the product as much as the image.

There is no shortage of generic pictures of India. What makes a Verandah Press print different is that it begins with a real person's memory of a real place, and it arrives with the story that shaped it. You are not buying a decoration. You are keeping a piece of someone's remembered home.
